Think you have outgrown acne? Think again. Adult acne is on the rise and while more women get acne as adults than men, men have longer-lasting acne and can have more severe acne than women. So why do grown men have acne? We break it down here for you.
Reason 1: Hormones
Testosterone is part of a class of hormones known as androgens. In adult men, testosterone plays a major role in influencing libido, hair growth, muscle mass and sperm production.
Excess testosterone and fluctuations in testosterone can increase the skin's sebum (oil) production, which makes your skin prime ground for acne bacteria.
Increased testosterone can come from anabolic steroid use or supplements -- so hold back on those if you are taking them.
Reason 2: Sweat, dirt, heat/friction
While sweat by itself does not cause acne, it combines with sebum (read above) and dirt, which clogs pores. This often happens after a workout, or after activities in a warm and humid environment. It is important to keep your workout clothes breathable and to wash your face/body properly after a workout!
Reason 3: It could be your shave
Many of you may not realise this, but your shave could be causing your breakouts. Some shave sins that could contribute to clogged pores, skin irritation, and ingrown hairs:
- Shaving in the wrong way (never against the grain!),
- Using a blunt razor,
- Using an alcohol-based or comedogenic shaving cream,
- Forgetting to hydrate after.
